വീണ്ടും ഗാഡ്ഗിൽ

"ഒന്നുകിൽ ആശാന്റെ നെഞ്ചത്ത് അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കളരിക്ക് പുറത്ത്" എന്ന കേരളത്തിന്റെ അവതരണഗീതത്തിന്റെ ആത്മാവുൾക്കൊണ്ടുകൊണ്ട് ഗാട്ഗിൽ റിപ്പോർട്ടിന്റെ കഥ നമ്മൾ അങ്ങിനെ കഴിച്ചു. പശ്ചിമഘട്ടമെന്നത് ഈ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ എല്ലാ നന്മകളുടെയും ഉറവിടമാണെന്നും, അത് കൂടുതൽ അപകടപ്പെടുത്താതെ അടുത്ത തലമുറയ്ക്ക് കൈമാറാൻ നമുക്ക് ബാധ്യതയുണ്ടെന്നും, അതിനുള്ള ചെലവു അതിന്റെ ഗുണഭോക്താക്കലെല്ലാം ചേർന്ന് വഹിക്കണം എന്നുമുള്ള സാമാന്യ ബുദ്ധി നമുക്ക് പിടികിട്ടിയില്ല. ഒന്നുകിൽ ഇപ്പോഴത്തെ മട്ടിൽ പശ്ചിമഘട്ടത്തെ തുരന്നു തിന്നുന്ന പരിപാടി അതേപോലെ തുടരണം, അല്ലെങ്കിൽ അവിടത്തെ കൃഷിക്കാരെ മുഴുവൻ രായ്ക്കു രാമാനം ഇറക്കി വിടണം എന്നീ രണ്ടു ഓപ്ഷനെ നമുക്ക് മനസ്സിലായുള്ളൂ. മദ്യം കുറയ്ക്കണം എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞാൽ മൊത്തം മദ്യഷാപ്പുകളും അടച്ചിടുന്ന മർക്കട ബുദ്ധിയ്ക്ക് അതിനപ്പുറം ചിന്തിക്കാനാവില്ല എന്നതിൽ അദ്ഭുതമില്ല. സാധാരണ മനുഷ്യന്റെ വേദന കാണാതിരുന്ന സർക്കാർ, ഒരവസരം കാത്തിരുന്ന ദ്രോഹബുദ്ധികളായ സർക്കാരുദ്യോഗസ്ധന്മാരുടെ വായിലേയ്ക്ക് അവരെ എറിഞ്ഞു കൊടുത്തു. സി പി എം ഒഴികെ ഒരു പാർട്ടിയും അവരുടെ അവസ്ഥ മനസ്സിലാക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമം പോലും നടത്തിയില്ല. ഫലം: കഴുകന്മാരായ പുരോഹിതന്മാരുടെ നേതൃത്വം മാത്രം രക്ഷ എന്ന ഭീകരമായ അവസ്ഥയിൽ അവർ എത്തിപ്പെട്ടു. വഴിതടയലും വണ്ടി കത്തിക്കലുമൊക്കെ അതിന്റെ ബാക്കിപത്രങ്ങളാണ്. ഇനിയെന്ത് എന്ന കാര്യത്തിൽ ഇത്തിരിയെങ്കിലും പ്രായോഗികമായ നയം ഉറക്കെപ്പറഞ്ഞത് സി പി എം മാത്രമാണ്: രണ്ടു റിപ്പോർട്ടിനെയും പറ്റി പഠിച്ചു കൃഷിക്കാരുടെ പ്രശ്നങ്ങൾ മനസ്സിലാക്കി അവരെക്കൂടി ഉൾപ്പെടുത്തി ഒരു ജനകീയ പ്രസ്ഥാനമാക്കി പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ട സംരക്ഷണത്തെ മാറ്റണം. ഇക്കാര്യം പറഞ്ഞാൽ മനസ്സിലാകുന്ന ആരും തിരുവനന്തപുരത്തെ സെക്രട്ടെരിയട്ടിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്നില്ല എന്ന കാര്യം മനസ്സിലാക്കി പ്രകാശ് ജാദവെക്കർ എന്ന, അത്യാവശ്യം മനുഷ്യപ്പറ്റുണ്ടെന്നു തോന്നിക്കുന്ന ആ കേന്ദ്ര മന്ത്രിയെക്കണ്ട് ഇക്കാര്യം ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തണം. ഇക്കാര്യം ചെയ്യാൻ ബാധ്യതയുണ്ടായിട്ടും ഒന്നും ചെയ്യാതെ വെറുതെ വാചകമടിച്ച്ചുനടന്ന പി ടി തോമസിനെ കണക്കാക്കേണ്ടതില്ല. കൈയിലുള്ള എം പി യെ തുരുപ്പു ചീട്ടാക്കി ഉപയോഗിച്ചു കേന്ദ്രത്തെ കാര്യങ്ങൾ ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്താൻ ശ്രമിക്കണം. പശ്ചിമ ഘട്ടം സംരക്ഷിക്കുക എന്നാൽ അടുത്ത തലമുറയ്ക്ക് കുടിവെള്ളം ഉറപ്പുവരുത്താൻ നമ്മൾ ചെയ്യുന്ന മിനിമം കാര്യമാണ്.

Prohibition and its perils

When I was working for Deccan Chronicle in Hyderabad some 15 years ago, I met with Archbishop S Arulappa on the eve of his celebrating the golden jubilee of his priesthood. That was a time when dry law was in force in AP. I asked him casually what he thought of prohibition, because it was a hotly debated subject. I expected a standard answer from a Catholic priest, but what he spoke shocked me. "The government has no business dictating to the citizen what he should eat or drink." It made the lead headline the next day. And he escaped unhurt as he was the senior most bishop in India at that time and nobody had the guts to chide him for that comment. A move to restrict access to hard liquor is always welcome. There will be a lot of women who heave a big sigh of relief today, with the hope that they will step into a better life now. A lot of wives will now be tortured less; and a lot of children will find their fathers loving human beings instead of the monsters they used to be. That is what I deduct from the information I received after the closure of 418 bars. A total ban would add to it, and hence its welcome. But that's for alcoholics. What about the citizen who knows what he does? I feel, like Dr Arulappa, that its unfair for the State to dictate to its citizens in matters of such personal choices. I would have welcomed it with more joy if the government had promoted responsible drinking. I am of the firm opinion that it involves larger issues of individual freedoms of the citizens in a democratic republic. Political chicanery cannot get the better of such freedoms. Its not done, sir. And as a journalist who has reported on Kerala's economy for more than a decade, I fear for the growth of the tourism industry in the State. I have met with tourists as well as operators who insisted that most foreign visitors come to Kerala not to get drunk; they enjoy nursing a drink in the Kerala setting. They may not like doing it in a five-star ambience; if that were the case, they could very well do it there in their homeland. The latest decision will make that beautiful experience well nigh impossible. To ban something is easy, but to make the right choice of the options available calls for honesty of purpose, at the least. But as Warren Buffet put it, honesty is an expensive gift, and you cannot expect it from cheap people. One for the road: When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

കൃത്യം പത്തുകൊല്ലം മുൻപാണത്.

രാജ്യസഭയിലേയ്ക് വന്ന ഒഴിവുകളിൽ രണ്ടിലും മുൻപൊരിക്കലുമില്ലാത്തതുപൊലെ 'ഹൈക്കമാണ്ട്' സ്ഥാനാർഥികൾ പ്രത്യക്ഷപ്പെട്ടു. അടവുകളുടെ ആശാനായിരുന്ന കെ കരുണാകരന് 'എ' ഗ്രൂപ്പ് കൊടുത്ത പണിയായിരുന്നു അത്. കേരളത്തിലെ കോണ്ഗ്രസ് സീറ്റുകൾ ആർക്കെന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നതിൽ പത്തു മുപ്പതുകൊല്ലക്കാലം അവസാനവാക്കുപറഞ്ഞിരുന്ന 'ലീഡരെ' അപ്രസക്തനാക്കുന്നതിൽ ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിലുള്ള 'എ' ഗ്രൂപ്പ് നേടിയ ആദ്യത്തെ വിജയം.


നേരിട്ടുള്ള കളിയിലോ കോണ്ഗ്രസ് പ്രവർത്തകരുടെ പിന്തുണയിലോ കരുണാകരന്റെ ഏഴയലത്ത് നില്ക്കാനുള്ള യോഗ്യതയില്ലാത്ത ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടിയുടെയും കൂട്ടരുടെയും കളികൾ വിജയം കണ്ടു തുടങ്ങിയ ആദ്യ നാളുകൾ. നിൽക്കക്കള്ളിയില്ലാതെ റിബൽ സ്ഥാനാർഥിയെ നിർത്തി കരുണാകരൻ ഹൈക്കമാണ്ടിന്റെ കരിമ്പട്ടികയിൽ കയറിയപ്പോൾ ചാണ്ടി ആദ്യ വിജയം ആഘോഷിച്ചു.

'ഐ' ഗ്രൂപ്പിന്റെ കുത്തകയായിരുന്ന ഏറണാകുളം ലോക്സഭാ സീറ്റിൽ 'ഐ'ക്കാരനായിരുന്ന ജോർജ് ഈഡന്റെ മരണത്തെത്തുടർന്നുണ്ടായ ഒഴിവിൽ 'എ' സ്ഥാനാർഥിയെ നിർത്തി, ലീഡറെ നാണം കെടുത്തി. കൈവിട്ട കളിക്കിറങ്ങിയ കരുണാകരൻ എൽ ഡി എഫ് സ്ഥാനാർഥി സെബാസ്റ്റ്യൻ പോളിന്റെ ചിഹ്നമായ 'ടെലവിഷൻ' അനുയായികൾക്ക് ചൂണ്ടിക്കാട്ടി അവസാന കളിക്കിറങ്ങി. സ്വന്തം ശക്തിയിൽ, മിടുക്കിൽ ഒക്കെ അമിത വിശ്വാസമുണ്ടായിരുന്ന കരുണാകരന്റെ അവസാനത്തിന്റെ ആരംഭമായിരുന്നു അത്.

കോണ്ഗ്രസ് സ്ഥാനാർഥി തോറ്റെങ്കിലും കരുണാകരനെ കൊണ്ഗ്രസിന്റെ പടിയിറക്കുന്നതിൽ ഉമ്മൻചാണ്ടി വിജയിച്ചു. ഇടതുമുന്നണിയിൽ നിൽക്കക്കള്ളിയില്ലാതെ ഒരു ഗതിയും പരഗതിയുമില്ലാതെ നിന്നപ്പോൾ യു ഡി എഫിലേയ്ക്ക് സ്വീകരിച്ച കരുണാകരനിട്ടു തന്നെ കൊടുത്തു പണി. ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധിയുടെ എന്നത്തെയും വിശ്വസ്തനായിരുന്ന കരുണാകരൻ ഒരു വാക്ക് എതിർത്തിരുന്നെകിൽ മുന്നണി പ്രവേശനമോ കോണ്ഗ്രസ് ലയനമോ നടക്കാതെ ഒരു ഇത്തിരി കൂടി വലിയ ഒരു കടന്നപ്പള്ളി ആയി ആന്റണിയും ചാണ്ടിയുമൊക്കെ ഒടുങ്ങിയേനെ.

 ആന്റണിയുടെ കളരിയിൽ കരുണാകരനെതിരെ പയറ്റിയാണ് ഉമ്മൻചാണ്ടി രാഷ്ട്രീയം കളിച്ചത്. ആ രണ്ടുമുറകളും അറിയുകയും ചെയ്യാം. പക്ഷെ കൂടുതൽ അറിയാവുന്നത്, പ്രയോഗിക്കുന്നതും, എതിരാളിയായ കരുണാകരനിൽ നിന്നും പഠിച്ച കുതന്ത്രങ്ങൾ തന്നെ. കരുണാകരനെതിരെ അവ വിജയം കണ്ടു എന്നത് നേര്. പക്ഷെ അതെ തന്ത്രം രമേശ്‌ ചെന്നിത്തലയ്കെതിരെ പ്രയോഗിക്കുമ്പോൾ എൽക്കുന്നില്ല.

 ചെന്നിത്തല ഒരു രാഷ്ട്രീയ തന്ത്രജ്ഞനാണെന്ന് അദ്ദേഹത്തിൻറെ ശത്രുക്കൾ പോലും പറയില്ല. കുറച്ചു ഹിന്ദി, കുറച്ചു ബാലജനസഖ്യം, കരുണാകരന്റെ വാത്സല്യം, പിന്നെ നല്ല ഉറപ്പുള്ള തലേവര ഇതൊക്കെയാണ് അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ബലം. മധ്യതിരുവിതാംകൂറിന്റെ വർഗീയ ചിന്തയിൽ നായരായതുകൊണ്ട് കിട്ടിയ ചില ചില്ലറ ആനുകൂല്യങ്ങളും. ഇതൊക്കെ വച്ചുള്ള കളികൊണ്ട്, കരുണാകരന്റെ തലകൊയ്ത ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടിയോട് പിടിച്ചു നില്ക്കാൻ എങ്ങിനെ കഴിയുന്നു?

 ഇവിടെയാണ്‌ സോണിയാ ഗാന്ധിയുടെ സ്വഭാവത്തിന്റെ ഒരു പ്രത്യേകത ചെന്നിത്തലയ്ക്ക് സഹായകമായത്. സ്വന്തം കഴിവിൽ ഇന്ദിരാഗാന്ധിയ്കും നരസിംഹറാവുവിനും ഒരു പക്ഷെ രാജീവ് ഗാന്ധിയ്ക് പോലും ഉണ്ടായിരുന്ന ഉറപ്പൊന്നും ഇല്ലാത്ത ആളാണ്‌ സോണിയ. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ വലിയ 'കളിക്കാരെ' കഴിയുന്നതും ഒഴിവാക്കി നിർത്തുകയാണ് അവരുടെ പതിവ്. ശരാശരിക്കാരുടെ ടീമാണ് സോണിയയുടെത് വലിയ വര്ത്തമാനം പറയാത്ത, ജോലി ചെയ്യുന്ന ആളുകളാണ് അവരുടെ ടീമിൽ മിക്കവാറും നല്ല സ്ഥാനങ്ങളിൽ ഇരിക്കുന്നവർ. മൻമോഹൻസിംഗ് മുതൽ ആന്റണിയുടെയും പള്ളം രാജുവിന്റെയും ഒക്കെ സ്ഥാന ലബ്ധിക്കു പിറകിൽ ഈ പ്രത്യേകതയാണ്.

അങ്ങിനെയുള്ള സോണിയയുടെ മുൻപിലേയ്ക്ക് കെണിവച്ചു പിടിച്ച കെ പി സി സി പ്രസിഡന്റിനെ കറിവച്ചു തരണമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു ചെന്നിടത്താണ് ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടിയ്ക് പിഴച്ചത്. ഇന്ദിരയോ റാവുവോ ആയിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ ഉമ്മൻചാണ്ടിയോടൊപ്പം ഇരയുടെ കളി ആസ്വദിച്ചേനെ. കൂട്ടിൽ കിടന്നുള്ള ചെന്നിത്തലയുടെ ദയനീയ നോട്ടം സോണിയയുടെ മനസ്സിളക്കും. സോണിയയെ അളക്കുന്നതിൽ, പാവം കളിക്കാനുള്ള ചെന്നിത്തലയുടെ ബുദ്ധി അളക്കുന്നതിൽ, ചാണ്ടിയുടെ അതിബുദ്ധിയ്ക് തെറ്റി. എതിരാളികളെ അളക്കുന്നതിൽ, സ്വന്തം മിടുക്ക് കാണിക്കുന്നതിൽ, കരുണാകരന് പറ്റിയ അബദ്ധം, പത്തുവർഷത്തിനുശേഷം ചാണ്ടിയ്ക്കും പറ്റി.

 മിടുക്കുണ്ടായാൽ മാത്രം പോര. മിടുക്ക് കാണിക്കാൻ പാടില്ലാത്ത സ്ഥലത്ത് മിടുക്ക് കാണിക്കാതിരിക്കാനുള്ള മിടുക്ക് കൂടി വേണം. അത് കരുണാകരൻ ആദ്യം മറന്നു. ഇപ്പോൾ ചാണ്ടിയും.

ആറെസ്സെസ്സിന്റെ ബി ജെ പി ടേക്ക്ഓവർ

അങ്ങിനെ ആറെസ്സെസ്സിന്റെ ബി ജെ പി ടേക്ക്ഓവർ പൂർത്തിയായി. ബി ജെ പി യുടെ സ്ഥാപക നേതാവ് എന്നത് മാത്രമല്ല പലപ്പോഴും വാജ്പേയിയോടു ഇത്തിരി അകലം പാലിക്കാൻ ആരെസ്സെസ്സിനെ നിര്ബന്ധിച്ചത്. സർ സംഘ ചാലക്മാർ ആയിരുന്ന രാജുഭയ്യയും സുദർശനും ആറെസ്സെസ്സിൽ വാജ്പേയിയുടെ ജൂനിയർമാരായിരുന്നു. ജോർജ് ഫെർണാണ്ടസിനെ പ്രതിരോധ മന്ത്രി ആക്കുന്നതടക്കം പ്രധാന തീരുമാനങ്ങളിൽ മുറുമുറുപ്പോടെ അംഗീകരിക്കേണ്ടി വന്നത് ആ സീനിയോരിട്ടി ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നതുകൊണ്ടാണ്. പക്ഷെ വാജ്പേയി പോയതോടെ ആ കളി നിന്നു. സ്വയം വാജ്പേയി ആകാൻ ശ്രമിച്ച, എന്നും ആരെസ്സിന്റെ അരുമയായിരുന്ന അദ്വാനി, സംഘത്തിന്റെ ലക്ഷമണ രേഖ ലംഘിച്ചതിന് കൊടുത്ത വില വളരെ വലുതാണ്‌. ഇന്ത്യൻ പ്രധാനമന്ത്രി സ്ഥാനത്തേക്കുള്ള ആരോഹനത്തിനു സെക്കുലർ ഇമേജ് സഹായിക്കും എന്ന് വിചാരിച്ചു ജിന്നയെ പ്രശംസിച്ച അദ്വാനി പക്ഷെ പിന്നീടൊരിക്കലും സംഘത്തിന്റെ ഗുഡ് ബുക്സിൽ കയറിയില്ല. അപ്പോഴേക്കും ഗുജറാത്ത് കലാപം കൈകാര്യം ചെയ്ത രീതിയിലൂടെ നരേന്ദ്ര മോഡി ആ സ്ഥാനത്തെയ്ക്ക് വന്നു കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നു. ചരിത്രത്തിൽ ആദ്യമായി സംഘ് പരിവാരിനു ഭരണത്തിൽ നിർണായക പങ്കു ലഭിക്കത്തക്ക വിധത്തിൽ ബി ജെ പി ഒറ്റയ്ക്ക് ഭൂരിപക്ഷത്തിലെയ്ക്ക് നയിച്ച മോഡിയ്ക്കും ഒരു മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നല്കാൻ സംഘം മറന്നില്ല. ഈയിടെ അമിത് ഷായുടെ പ്രസിഡന്റ്റ് സ്ഥാനം അംഗീകരിക്കാൻ ചേർന്ന നാഷണൽ കൌണ്‍സിൽ യോഗത്തിൽ ഷായും മോഡിയും ആറെസ്സെസ്സിന്റെ പേര് പറയാതെ പരസ്പരം പുറം ചൊറിഞ്ഞത് തീരെ പിടിക്കാത്ത സർ സംഘചാലക് മോഹൻ ഭാഗവത് തൊട്ടടുത്ത അവസരത്തിൽത്തന്നെ ഇരുവർക്കും മുന്നറിയിപ്പ് നല്കി. ഒരു നേതാവിന്റെയും വ്യക്തിപരമായ നേട്ടമല്ല തെരഞ്ഞെടുപ്പു വിജയം എന്ന് തെളിഞ്ഞ ഭാഷയിൽ നേതാക്കന്മാരെ ഓർമ്മിപ്പിക്കാൻ ഭാഗവത് മറന്നില്ല. ഇപ്പോൾ അദ്വാനിയും ജോഷിയും ചിത്രത്തിൽനിന്ന് മായുന്നതോടെ എല്ലാം പൂർത്തിയായി.

കുടിയേറ്റക്കാരായ കർഷകർ വ്യാപകമായി ചാരായവും കള്ളും കുടിച്ചു നശിക്കുകയും കുടുംബങ്ങൾ നാനാവിധമാവുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നത് കണ്ടു മനംനൊന്ത് തലശ്ശേരി ബിഷപ്പും ഗാന്ധിയനുമായിരുന്ന ഡോ. സെബാസ്റ്യൻ വള്ളോപ്പിള്ളിയാണ് മദ്യവർജ്ജനം എന്ന ആശയം മൂന്നു നാല് പതിറ്റാണ്ട് മുന്പ് സാമൂഹത്തിന്റെ അജണ്ടയിലെയ്ക്ക് കാര്യമായി കൊണ്ടുവരുന്നത്. എം പി മന്മഥനും കുമാരപിള്ളയും ഒക്കെയുള്ള ഒരു സാമൂഹ്യ പരിവർത്തന പ്രസ്ഥാനമായി അത് മാറി. സമ്പൂർണ്ണ മദ്യനിരോധനം എന്ന വാദം അപ്രായോഗികമാണ് എന്നറിയാവുന്നതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ ബോധവൽക്കരണം, നിയന്ത്രണം എന്നിങ്ങനെ പടിപടിയായുള്ള ഒരു നീക്കമാണ് അവർ ഉദ്ദേശിച്ചിരുന്നത്. ആകുന്ന കാലത്തോളം സ്വന്തം ഖദർ ളോഹ സ്വയം അലക്കിയുടുത്തിരുന്ന വള്ളോപ്പള്ളിയിൽനിന്നും കേരള കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയെ കച്ചവടം പഠിപ്പിച്ച ക്ലിമീസിലെക്കെത്തിയപ്പോൾ പഴയ വിനയത്തിന്റെ ഭാഷയൊക്കെ മാറി; ബാറുകൾ തുറന്നാൽ സര്ക്കാരിന്റെ അന്ത്യമായിരിക്കുമെന്ന, തികച്ചും പൊള്ളയായ പക്ഷെ അഹങ്കാരം നിറഞ്ഞ വാചകമടി നമ്മൾ കേട്ടു. ഫലം: സുധീരനുമായുള്ള യുദ്ധത്തിൽ തോല്ക്കും എന്ന ഘട്ടം വന്നപ്പോൾ ഉമ്മൻ ചാണ്ടി എടുത്തുചാടി നടത്തിയ പ്രഖ്യാപനത്തിന് കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭയുമുത്തരം പറയേണ്ടുന്ന അവസ്ഥ! പരമാവധി ഓരോ കുർബാനയ്ക്കും അഞ്ചു മുതൽ പത്തു മി ലി വരെ ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്ന വീഞ്ഞിന്റെ പേരിൽ 23 ഡിസ്റ്റിലറിയുള്ള വമ്പൻ മദ്യ സാമ്രാജ്യമായി അങ്ങിനെ ഒറ്റ രാത്രികൊണ്ട്‌ കത്തോലിക്കാ സഭ മാറി. കച്ചവടക്കാരന്റെ വിടുവായത്തത്തിനു കൊടുക്കേണ്ടി വന്ന വില! ഗുരുവിനെയും ഗുരുദർശനങ്ങളെയും കാശാക്കി മാറ്റിയ വെള്ളാപ്പള്ളി നടേശൻ എന്ന മദ്യ മുതലാളിയുടെ മുള്ളുവച്ച വർത്തമാനത്തിനു മുൻപിൽ വസ്ത്രമുരിഞ്ഞപോലെയായി ഡിസ്റ്റിലറി ലൈസൻസ് പെട്ടിയിൽ വച്ചു സമ്പൂർണ്ണ മദ്യ നിരോധനം നടത്തിയില്ലെങ്കിൽ സര്ക്കാരിനെ വീഴിക്കും എന്ന് വീമ്പു പറഞ്ഞു നടന്ന പിതാക്കന്മാർ. നാട്ടിലെ നിയമത്തിനു മേലെ ഒരു നിയമവും പാടില്ല, ഒരു മത സമ്പ്രദായത്തിനും വിശ്വാസത്തിനും ഒഴിവുകൊടുക്കേണ്ട ആവശ്യവുമില്ല. സമ്പൂർണ്ണ മദ്യ നിരോധനം വേണം എന്നാവശ്യപ്പെട്ടിട്ടു വൈൻ മദ്യമല്ല എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു നില്ക്കാനുള്ള ശ്രമം പരിഹാസ്യമാണ്. അതുകൊണ്ട് പിതാക്കന്മാരെ, പറഞ്ഞത് വെള്ളാപ്പള്ളിയാണെന്നത് വിട്ടേക്കുക. വലിയ മനുഷ്യർ ഇരുന്ന കസേരയാണത്, കേൾക്കുന്നതുകൊണ്ട്‌ ഒരു കുറച്ചിലുമില്ല.ഡിസ്റ്റിലറി ലൈസൻസ് തിരിച്ചേൽപ്പിക്കുക. അത്യാവശ്യമാണെങ്കിൽ മുന്തിരിപിഴിഞ്ഞു നീരെടുക്കുക. അല്ലെങ്കിൽ കട്ടൻകാപ്പികൊണ്ട്‌ തൃപ്തിപ്പെടുക. പിന്നെ, കച്ചവടക്കാരിൽനിന്ന് നിങ്ങളെത്തന്നെ തിരിച്ചു പിടിക്കാൻ വല്ല വഴിയുമുണ്ടോയെന്ന് നോക്കുക.

Smart Card. Made In India

After a long time, I find India makes a smart foreign policy move. Looks like it has left the Americans and Pakistanis to settle their score, and is pursuing its old friends in the Islamic world. Or why the sudden embrace of Iran and support for Palestine?

For long, India told the whole world about Pakistan’s links to terrorism. But the big powers, save the Soviets, often scoffed at India’s complaints, and advised it not play big brother with the humble, poor Pakistan. When the planes hit the underbelly of Big Apple, American eyes almost popped out and saw through the Pakistani plans.

But both the players continued with their double games: Pakistan continued to be a friend of Taliban and US; US continued to be a friend of Pakistan. India, though continued to be an enemy of Pakistan and Taliban, did not become a friend of US. Pakistan is part of the problem, Jaswant Singh, then foreign minister, kept insisting, and hence cannot be part of the solution. None was bothered.

India, instead of keeping its cool with an “I-told-you-so” wink, kept egging on the US. Uncle Sam attached only irritant value to it, for they knew their game well now. It, however, played platitudes (we are natural allies…) and ensured that India lost its allies in the West Asia. When Iraq was attacked, India took its sweet time to decide not to take a stand on it. Palestine vanished from the Indian policy radar. There would be no parallel for stupidity in international diplomacy to India’s uncalled for vote against Iran in IAEA meet. It, forever, soured the relations between two people (we are brothers, history tells us) which began when history did. US even blocked the Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline. Poor Mani Shankar Aiyar, the relic of Nehruvian foreign policy school, was the only apparent loser: he lost his job as oil minister after diligently pursuing the project.

A decade later, it appears the games of US and Pakistan have played themselves out. The American media is raging with anger ever since the Bin Laden discovery. There is a Bill in US Congress now to freeze all aid to Pakistan, save for securing its nukes. Its Joint Chiefs of Staff openly said ISI had planned the Kabul embassy attack. Unlike in the past, Pakistan also fired its empty shells back at US. Hina Rabbani Khar, whose officers would have bought her ticket to New York with the dollars they borrowed from US mission in Islamabad, threatened the US with risking its valuable ally. And of late, while refusing to act against the Haqani network (‘once the blue-eyed boy of CIA: Khar), Pakistan has said enemies of China are enemies of Pakistan, too. Another attempt to up its price in bargaining with the US.

A surprise absence in the whole melee has been, India. Instead of being self-invited and playing second fiddle to the US, it has chosen to play its game. It openly supported Palestine’s right to statehood. Manmohan Singh accepted the maverick Ahmadinejad’s invitation to visit Teheran. It has almost opened a war (of words, of course) front with China on oil exploration in South China Sea, giving the US indication that it could, if it wants, air its support.

Now US will fight India’s war with Pakistan. S M Krishna can relax. In the meantime, he can get his wig serviced at Gulfgate, and get ready for the next meeting with Ms Khar.

Et, too, Achu?

Friends, Indians and thara countrymen,
lend me your ears.

I come to ban Endosulfan, not to spray it.

Achuthanandan wants to ban it all over India
For it has killed and maimed people.
Very good. But isn’t the tragedy limited to
Kasaragod where it was sprayed aerially?
Is there a report from anywhere else
Where it was not sprayed so?

But Achuthanandan says it is dangerous;
And Achuthanandan is an honourable man.
And he is on a fast.

Why did the CIB permit its aerial spray,
For a long, from 1978 to 1992?
Didn’t they know it would kill people,
poison air, pollute water and degrade soil?
Who was the culprit, endosulfan or
those who cleared it for aerial spraying?
Is Achuthanandan planning to prosecute them all?

But Achuthanandan says it is dangerous;
And Achuthanandan is an honourable man.

Isn’t Plantation Corporation,
which sprayed it on people,
a government company?
How come it sprayed endosulfan
from 1992 till 2001
without CIB permission?
Who is more dangerous, endosulfan, or
Those who sprayed it on people?
Is he planning to prosecute them all?

But Achuthanandan is on a fast.
And he is an honourable man.

Hasn’t the Kerala Assembly pass a bill
to set up a tribunal for
compensating Plachimada people?
Isn’t Coca-Cola being held accountable?
Why not a tribunal for Enmakaje victims?
or is it that only MNCs need to be answerable?

But Achutanandan is on a fast for the people of India.
And he is an honourable man.
Isn’t he shooting the messenger?
Isn’t he playing a cruel joke on people?
Isn’t the media playing along, stupidly?
O judgment! Thou art fled to brutish beasts,
